Music Biz 2023: Three Key Takeaways

Each year, the music industry descends upon Nashville for the city’s annual Music Biz conference. With a lot going on across the three days, here are some of the key takeaways from this year’s event:

  • With three separate panels devoted to the topic, the industry is clearly paying attention to streaming fraud and how to limit its negative impact on both labels and rights holders. While the threat of fraud has the potential to siphon billions of dollars from the streaming revenue pie, the panelists remain optimistic that increased attention to the topic and advancements in technology will dramatically help the industry identify and prevent fraud in the future.

  • MIDiA Research predicts that streaming revenue growth will fall to just 3% by the year 2029. The research firm’s data suggests that DSP’s “soft power” is starting to shrink, allowing sites like TikTok which promote “lean-through” music consumption- creating social content, curating content and re-creating content with music- to flourish.

  • The Black Music Action Coalition (BMAC) unveiled their report card on the industry’s progress in addressing historical racism and inequity according to four criteria: Corporate commitments, partnerships and giving; company representation on a senior level; internal culture and business practices; and transparency and public accountability.

TikTok testing “add song” feature

Just 6 months after Lyor Cohen’s pointed statement that “short-form video that doesn’t lead anywhere is the most dangerous thing I’ve seen the music business face in a long time,” TikTok appears to be testing a new “add song” feature for videos containing music- directly linking to a users’ preferred music app.

While this phrasing indicates that multiple streaming services will be available, Apple Music is the only available option during this current testing phase. In looking at the feature’s potential impact, this direct integration will allow TikTok to quantifiably measure their impact on streams- data that TikTok and the labels alike are sure to find particularly interesting.
