VILLANELLE, the Mercury Prize, and Spotify finally launches lossless audio for premium subscribers

VILLANELLE
“Hinge”
VILLANELLE

UK trio VILLANELLE – comprised of frontman Gene Gallagher, guitarist Ben Taylor and bassist Jack Schiavo – shared the grunge-inflected track, “Hinge”, which arrives as the group are putting the finishing touches on their upcoming EP. Drawing from the sound of Black Sabbath, Nirvana, and Deftones – and inspired by the anxious delirium of a bad hangover – Gallagher described the track as “a proper right-hook of a song” largely made up of “heavy guitars” while speaking exclusively to NME recently. “That’s my favourite tone of any song: just really chuggy chords and really fucking distorted,” he told us. “All my favourite songs are like that – very punk rock. It’s just an aggressive song. I want it to sound like having a freakout. The lyrics are anxious as fuck.” -NME

“An effortless hop from the carpet onto the office furniture. A split-second survey of the audience gathered. Two steps, then liftoff and barrel roll. Not only does Brendan Yates execute the first-ever stage dive — and ensuing crowd surf — at the Tiny Desk, but he does so with athletic grace. That's how this Turnstile concert ends, but not before a wild reimagination of the hardcore band's wide-ranging sound, featuring piano and a horn section.” -Lars Gotrich
