w/ Voice Lab LA's Amy Chapman
This week, we’re joined by Amy Chapman, speech pathologist at Voice Lab LA and voice coach on Fox’s The Masked Singer
Being a voice coach on a show like the Masked Singer is such a unique application of your expertise- how did this opportunity come about?
One of my other clients (who shall remain nameless) was asked to be on the show and she asked to bring me on as her coach instead of using the shows vocal coaches. Then my singer wasn’t able to do the show due to scheduling conflicts but the producers called me up and asked me to work on the show so it all worked out!
In terms of time commitment and a general training regimen, what does your involvement entail with each contestant you work with?
Each contestant is different. Some are professional singers who really want me to arrange music to make them sound their best, and some are professional athletes who want me to teach them how to sing. And some are just coming on the show to have a good time and truthfully don’t care how they sound. So I cater to each contestants wants and needs.
Whether your client is a professional musician or an amatueur performing on the Masked Singer, your goal is to maximize the potential of a singer's voice. How do you determine what that potential is and what are the steps in helping them get there?
Well I fully support anyone who wants to sound better, even if they’ve been told their whole life they can’t hold a tune. If they want to sound better they will put in the work, and I WORK THEM. I’m a pusher so I will push until I see pushback. Then I’ll motivate and push them a little bit more.
Relative to professional musicians, are there any trends in the space that you're noticing? (As in maybe an increase in preventative care, an increase in vocal abuse, young artists/TikTokers turned artists not knowing how to sing properly/take care of their voice, etc.)
Vocal abuse has been on the rise since Rock and Roll started, so singers are always chasing the balance of stamina and artistry. But with social media, anyone can use their platform to promote their music so more people are creating which is amazing! But also people are learning how to sing from other influencers which sometimes is informative but without professional feedback telling you what you’re doing wrong you can easily go down a dangerous path.
What other services does Voice Lab LA offer professional singers?
If there is any kind of vocal problem , I help with all things professional voice. So I help good singers get better, rehab injured vocal professionals, prevent vocal injury, build strength and stamina, health of voice over artists, and various voiceover issues.
The ‘FIFA Songs’ effect
While gaming is always a focus for synch teams- no game rivals the size and impact of the FIFA franchise. Re-branded as FC 24 following the end of a years-long licensing deal, the latest edition of the game sold 6.8 million copies worldwide it ints first week.
Featuring more than 100 tracks by artists from over 30 countries, the FC 24 soundtrack reflects the truly global audience that the game has secured. With each soundtrack effectively serving as a pop culture time capsule, a phenomenon called ‘FIFA Songs’ exists where gamers form nostalgic attachments to songs included in the soundtrack.
Warner Music Group’s evp of global sync and U.S. visual media licensing Ron Broitman explains, “being placed in a game like this brings a track to millions of fans worldwide and can lead to meaningful streaming and consumption spikes. For developing artists it’s also an opportunity to introduce them to a massive, captive audience that maybe wouldn’t have heard their music otherwise.”
First round voting opens this week
As Grammy voting kicks off this Wednesday, we figured it would be helpful to answer some common questions around the voting process:
When is the ballot open? October 11th - October 20th
Who can vote? While the Recording Academy has three tiers of membership (Voting, Professional, and Grammy U), only voting members are eligible to vote on each ballot. Voting membership is limited to creatives (artists, producers, engineers, songwriters, etc.)
How does the voting work? Following the discontinuation of the Nomination Review committees, The Academy adopted a ‘10-3’ voting structure where voters can vote in up to 10 categories across a maximum of 3 genre fields. In each category, a voter can select up to five choices.
What happens next? The top 5 vote-getters in each category will become nominees, announced November 10th
