w/ Parker Jones

This week, we’re highlighting the incredibly talented Parker Jones- who, in addition to working on massive projects for A-list artists and global brands like NASCAR, is also the person who steers Radio Edit’s art direction across the newsletter and socials. She is responsible for Radio Edit’s entire aesthetic and we appreciate her so much for making us look good.

Outside of your illustrious role as Radio Edit's art director, what are some of your favorite projects you've worked on over the years?

First off, Radio Edit is one of my favvvvv things to work on. I’ve always wanted to work in music in any capacity, so getting able to be a part of this newsletter is so much fun. Aside from this I’ve done a bunch of random projects over the past few years, mainly trying to learn and try something in every pocket of the creative world. I still have a lot of ground to cover within it, but every project is special to me because I am constantly learning and growing from them. One of the coolest projects I worked on was being a PA for the Griz Rainbow brain video. Shout out to BMH!!! I was just a PA, but it was so cool to see all the moving parts within the project, that made magic. There are so many other projects that are my favorites, but this would end up being a novel.

Specifically, you just worked on a really cool project with NASCAR. Can you tell us a bit about that process?

YESSS! I had the opportunity to design a nascar for Bubba Wallace! I am currently working at an advertising company, in a creative accelerator program. One of the cool things about this program is that we get to work on a plethora of different projects, and I was put on a project to design a Nascar for their sponsor, McDonalds. My design ended up winning, and next thing you know I ended up in the Homestead Miami, in the pit! It was such a cool experience to see something from start to finish from my laptop to the track.

Looking at the music landscape and an artist's ability to connect with an audience, how important is establishing a thoughtful creative vision?

I think that if artists are able to establish a creative identity, their fans are able to get a better sense of who they are as a person and as an artist. Being able to express yourself musically and sonically is such a special talent, but also creating a creative visual identity to go with it… is magic! Especially nowadays, social media is such a huge part of our lives and also music marketing, it's so important to be consistent with your brand throughout the different platforms.

While you work across many different areas, what are some projects/concepts in the music space that you'd like to work on?

Honestly anything and everything!! Recently I’ve been doing a lot of short form content, and album cover design but I am hoping to branch out more into spaces like merch design, concert posters, visuals, social media management etc. Although one thing I realllyyyy want to get into, is creating liquid light shows. I went to a small show, and all the visuals were a liquid light show. I snuck up to the booth where they were doing it, and ended up chatting with the guy who was doing it about the history and the process of it. It was so insane to me. I love the idea of creating visuals that are always going to be different, because it makes it so special and personal to the artists. I’ve tinkered around with it in my apartment, but want to keep practicing and maybe one day get to do it for larger shows and venues.

Following increased pressure from independent artists and major labels alike, streaming services have been exploring ways to fairly compensate and prioritize rights holders with an updated payment structure.

Beginning in early 2024, Spotify will be implementing a new payout model that will primarily affect low-streaming and noise/nature tracks. While the streaming service will continue it’s pro-rata model, the new format will establish new floors for payouts aimed at growing the royalty pool for established artists and rights holders.

Additional aspects of the new model include penalties for fraudulent streaming activity and a minimum playing time threshold for noise tracks like rainfall or bird noises.

After announcing a multi-year licensing deal to exclusively produce and sell Formula 1 gear at its races, Puma has tapped A$AP Rocky to helm the creative direction. While this will be Rocky’s first time stepping into the sports apparel space, the artist has previously co-designed collections with marquee brands like JW Anderson, Marine Serre, and Guess Originals.

While the full breadth of this partnership remains to be seen, glimpses of the initial capsule collection include ‘racing gloves imprinted with Puma's recognizable motif, lacy balaclavas featuring Puma and F1 branding on the chin, and oversized quilted jackets doused in luminous green.’
