In an effort to compete with TikTok, who has seen massive popularity in sped-up or sped-down tracks, Spotify is reportedly working on a feature that lets users create modified versions of songs. Per a Pex report from February, approximately one-third of all songs found on TikTok in 2023 were speed or pitch-modified. While the new feature intends to compensate rightholders for streams of these edited versions, the licensing deals have yet to be worked out.

Sean Miyashiro, CEO of 88rising, has shared plans to focus “a very concentrated effort [towards] Japanese music – that means staff, time and energy, resources, and really understanding and trying to develop [artists]. Similar to Philippine music- focused Paradise Rising, there are also plans for 88rising to create a label that focuses solely on Japanese artists.
